The Visits

Between 1949 and 1959, J.R.R. Tolkien made four visits to Gregan's estate. He came to Galway as External Examiner at University College Galway, and stayed each time as the guest of Frank Martyn, then the owner of the castle.

The visits spanned a decade of his life — the years in which The Lord of the Rings was completed and published.

The Burren landscape

The Burren

What Tolkien made of the Burren he largely kept to himself. There are no letters claiming this place as Middle-Earth, no marked maps, no quoted passages.

But he came back. Four times, across a decade.

We believe this place changed him. We believe it shaped what he wrote, what he saw, what he carried home.
